    Employer Description Indicator

The Green Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creatively promoting and encouraging environmental sustainability in New Orleans. We recycle building materials and paint, deconstruct homes and salvage usable materials. We operate a building materials recycling store, promote community involvement and environmental activities, offer community space to other community-based organizations, and serve as an environmental reference resource for the Greater New Orleans area.

    WHAT WE DO:

The Green Project operates a WAREHOUSE STORE that resells high-quality, salvaged building materials at low cost to the community. The store is dedicated to helping the environment by reducing the amount of usable materials placed in landfills or disposed of improperly. You may bring reusable building materials to our warehouse store, or we can pick them up for a small fee.

The Green Project also supports others who SALVAGE OR DECONSTRUCT damaged or collapsed buildings by hand, in a way that saves between 45 and 70 percent of the materials. This preserves New Orleans' unique architectural history and benefits New Orleans' residents by returning their ruined building materials to use elsewhere in the city.

The Green Project store also serves as a local RECYCLED PAINTresource by reclaiming, combining, and reselling surplus paint. This keeps paint out of the region's landfills and water system while providing affordable paint to the community.

The Green Project warehouse serves as a RECYCLING center. We currently recycle cardboard, newspaper, regular paper (plain and colored), aluminum cans and household e-waste (electronic equipment like computers, stereos, printers, monitors, cell phones, etc). We can NOT take plastic or glass because no one in the city can pick it up. We also can NOT accept scrap metal - please take it to a scrap metal yard.

Our GARDEN is blooming. Through our gardening workshops you can learn how to make the most of a small space, recycle your yard and kitchen waste into compost and improve your soil.

RECYCLE FOR THE ARTS merged with The Green Project in 2003. R4A provides art materials to individual artists, schools, art programs, galleries, and other non-profit groups at minimal cost, as well as offers monthly recycled art workshops.

THE GREEN ROOM is an interactive community space that promotes using garbage and salvage as artistic material. The space is used to display the work of local artists and is available for workshops and community events. Contact us at info@thegreenproject.org if you'd like to rent The Green Room for your next event.

The Green Project is also involved in GREEN BUILDING & SPECIAL PROJECTS like our solar panels, biodiesel and community outreach.

    How We're Different Indicator

In 2008, The Green Project served 15,000 customers. That's 15,000 people who were able to repair their home using low-cost, recycled building supplies. Thanks to anyone who shopped here over the last year, or reused building materials in their own projects. Your support & creativity has kept reusable building materials out of the landfill, and has put it where it belongs - in the hands of our community.

In 2008, we saved 3,132 doors & 3,467 windows. That's all of the doors & windows needed to build 200 NEW homes. We're thankful that these items are going back into the historic buildings of New Orleans, instead of being sent to the trash or out of state. They belong here!

In 2008, we sold 22,193 pieces of reusable hardware. That's one doorknob (or cabinet pull or hinge) for every occupied home in the French Quarter, CBD, Bayou St. John, Treme, the 7th Ward, Gert Town AND Mid-City neighborhoods. We know that what we do makes a difference, and we are grateful that there are others out there (like yourself) who share the same values of creative reuse, thrift, and sustainability.

GREEN PROJECT WORKSHOPS: Every Saturday, 10:00am - noon, at The Green Project

WORN AGAIN nola3 (a benefit for Recycle For The Arts)

The infamous Recycled Dance Competition followed with original “old skool –vs- new skool” choreography performed by local dance troupes. DyVersatile Crew, a hip hop troupe from Mobile, kicked off our After Party with Stinging Caterpillar Sound System throwing down till the wee hours.

    Hiring Information Indicator

Volunteers are always welcome at The Green Project. Volunteer groups and individuals are invited to join us Monday-Saturday during warehouse store hours. We provide an educational, fun and often physically exhilarating experience for volunteers.   Some of the things you might do as a volunteer at The Green Project include: loading and unloading vehicles, carrying donated building materials into the warehouse, sorting materials (trim, lumber, electrical supplies, lighting), painting, pulling nails, sweeping, measuring doors and more. Our needs are different every day.

Be Bob Villa for a Day Do you have a skill or trade that others can benefit from? Come share your knowledge with our members. Topics may include weatherization, paint techniques, plumbing, installing windows doors, tile, carpet, etc. Workshops are held on Saturdays. Contact our Workshop Coordinator at kkempf@thegreenproject.org to sign up!

Spreading the Word Attend local events and festivals with The Green Project staff. Assist with setting up/breaking down of displays and communicating our mission and services to the general public.

Work in The Green Project Office Join the underappreciated Green Project office staff to stuff envelopes, maintain our membership database, update this beautiful website, write grant proposals, organize publicity for our workshops & art openings, or other fun administrative tasks.

A few things to keep in mind before you come:

      • Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at lpaul@thegreenproject.org to set up your first day. We usually can't accept walk-in volunteers.
      • Always wear closed-toed shoes. Work boots are great; steel-toed shoes are best.
      • Wear your grungiest old clothes. Plan on getting very, very dirty.
      • Bring work gloves if you have them, especially if you're working in our warehouse store. (We have extras, but they are filthy so it's nice to wear your own.)
      • Bring a water bottle (especially in the summer). You'll be very glad you did.
      • Our warehouse is not climate controlled so expect it to be as warm or cold inside as it is outside.

      When you get here:

      • Please complete our volunteer information form, if you have not done so in the past. Copies are available at the front desk of the warehouse.
      • Be sure to sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave. A sign in/out notebook is also at the front desk. We use this information to track volunteer hours for grants, so it's very important!!
      • Please be safe! The nature of our business means that there are nails, sharp corners, tripping hazards, and unstable piles. If you lift anything, be sure to use safe lifting techniques. Know your restrictions. If you aren't sure, ask a staff person. Be alert.

The Green Project needs volunteers from every background, with all skill levels to do many different kinds of jobs. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit. Whether you can come three days a week, or just once a month, we have a volunteer position for you! Also, we can accommodate people working off their community service hours. Please call and schedule your hours.   Sign up in advance by contacting Laura Paul at (504)344-4884 or lpaul@thegreenproject.org.   From the beginning, The Green Project has been powered by thousands of volunteers like you. We would not be here without your support. Thank you!
