- • What is KODA and what problem does your service solve?
- KODA is an online community of young professionals and employers.
Here are the problems as we see them:
- Social networks are for socializing, not for finding a job. There wasn’t an online community where both young professionals and employers could meet and present their best “selves.”
- Traditional resumes and job boards no longer work for highlighting today’s skill sets and company cultures.
- Online professional networks only work for people with at least a few years of experience.
- • How does KODA help young professionals connect with employers to find jobs?
KODA does this in a number of ways. Young professionals bring their personalities and passions to the professional table through posting videos, images and links in addition to relevant information about education, skills, work experience, and aspirations.
In turn, employers can provide a complete picture of their company, their culture, and their strategic differences on their company profile pages. We use technology to get to know both sides of the hiring equation to introduce the right candidate to the right job.
- • How did the idea of KODA come about?
- Tony York and Jeff Berger came up with the idea for KODA after being displaced from Tulane University by Hurricane Katrina. In their senior year and while starting over at a new school, they quickly became daunted by the task of starting their careers. After exploring current online job recruiting options, they set out to find a smarter, more strategic way for young professionals and employers to find one another: social recruiting.
- • How would you define social recruiting?
- We define it as using an online social medium to find your best candidate. KODA is the first online community where young professionals and companies can come together in a professional environment that encourages self-expression.
- • When was the site launched?
- May 2009
- • Where did the name “KODA” come from, and why “.us?”
We see ourselves as allies to both employers and young professionals. KODA is a Native American word for “ally or friend.” We’re proud of our name.
We chose ".us" because we see ourselves being in this process with our employers and our young professionals. We’re a team.
- • How has the current economy affected the launch of KODA?
- We are lucky enough to have angel investors who believe in our innovative vision for the recruiting process. And, with over 400 employers signing on during our beta period, we are on the right track. We feel that if we can build those alliances now, during such a difficult period, KODA will be the premier solution for social recruiting of young professionals going forward.
- • You are headquartered in both San Francisco and New Orleans. Why?
- We believe that both cities are epicenters of entrepreneurship and change.
- • How much does KODA cost?
- KODA is 100% free for people who wish to join our community. For employers, KODA has no upfront fees and no talent database fee. The site works on a pay-per-click model, so employers are charged when a candidate clicks to apply. We protect our clients by setting a low monthly cap on the number of billable clicks per job. - • Can I join KODA if I don’t have any professional work experience?
- Yes, absolutely. You can begin developing your profile as early as freshman year of college by describing your strengths, personality and life experiences, including on-campus activities. Your profile can grow with you over time
- • What do the compatibility bars on my profile mean?
- Compatibility bars appear throughout the site. Each diagram depicts the compatibility between
(1) a person, and (2) an employer or job, based on profile content and historical data. The
three bars in the diagram represent the following:
Essential Facts: considers data related to location, industry, employment type, salary and other basic informationAptitude: represents the correlation between a person’s skills, experience and education and an employer’s preferencesCulture: considers personal preferences regarding work environment, travel requirements, organization size, etc.

- • Why can't I connect with friends on KODA?
- While KODA is inspired by social networking sites, it simply isn’t one. It’s an opportunity community that’s designed to help young professionals and employers connect. There are other sites out there that can help you connect with your peers - but KODA can help you learn more about organizations, and it can help recruiters at those organizations find you.
- • Why can't I link to non-YouTube videos?
- We’re working on accepting URLs from other video hosting sites. Once we have the software in place, we’ll let you know. Thanks for your patience.
- • How do I delete my account?
- We're sorry to hear that you're no longer interested in KODA. You're welcome to stay, even if you're currently employed! To disable your account, send an email to customerservice@koda.us. If you can include a reason or offer any feedback, we'd really appreciate it.
- • How can I get a job at KODA?
- Thanks for asking! KODA has its own profile page where you can learn more about where we’re located, what we do, and who we’re looking for. Feel free to send us a message; we’d love to hear from you.
